Check out these very detailed gingerbread cakes and houses.
These are fun treats for the holiday season.
Some are easier to make than others. A gingerbread houses for example, takes a long time to make. However, a christmas cake is not hard to make! Here's one recipe we like.
To frost it, use this recipe and some different food colorings:
2 cups confectioners' sugar (powdered)
1/8 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk (more if needed)
1/8 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk (more if needed)
Then:
With electric mixer on low, blend all ingredients together for about 2 minutes, adding more milk (if necessary) until the icing is creamy (and soft enough to squeeze easily through a pastry bag.)
Whether you put this in a pastry bag or sturdy ziploc and cut the tip off (hopefully with more luck than I've had in the past,) the whole process of measuring and mixing this icing takes less than 5 minutes. And my kids doubled that time in the designing and decorating of their culinary creations.
